Studio Visiting and Mini Japanese Umbrella Making Experience

Umbrellas have a long and deep connection with traditional Japanese life and culture. There are several kinds of Japanese umbrellas.


However, due to the dramatic changes in Japanese lifestyles, it has become increasingly uncommon to see someone with a Japanese umbrella in their hand.


To provide a chance for people to learn more about Japanese umbrellas, Hiyoshiya offers an excellent umbrella studio experience and mini-umbrella making experience. English instruction is available. Reservations are required in advance.

Please note that studio visiting and umbrella making experience are not accepted occasionally because of unforeseeable circumstances. Please make sure to make a reservation before visiting us.

Studio Visiting

Time required: about 30 min.
Capacity: 5-20 people maximum
*If a group has more than 10 people, the group will be divided two and visit the first floor and second floor separately.
*Please understand that we don't accept a group less than 5 people.

Fee: 525 yen/person (tax included)

 

ŸWhat do you watch?
First floor: visitors can watch and touch umbrellas while a staff gives detail instructions about Japanese umbrella: kind, history, how to use, etc.
Second floor: in our real umbrella studio, a craftsman gives instructions about material, making tools, how to make, etc. Depend on the occasion, visitors can closely watch how a Japanese umbrella is made and enjoy watching how the umbrellas are dried out in a precinct of Hokyo-ji Temple across from the shop.
*what you will watch may change depending on weather and craftsmen's making schedule.

Mini Japanese Umbrella Making Experience

Time required: about 1-1.5 hours
Capacity: 5-20 people maximum
*If a group has more than 10 people, the group will be divided two and try in rotation. Please enjoy walking around the area while waiting for the other group.
*On-site experience service is available. Please enquire.


ŸWhat do you experience?

  1. attach your favorite washi Japanese paper on frame (frame is prepared in advance).
  2. while drying the attached paper, visit our umbrella studio. A craftsman will give detail instruction about Japanese umbrella and shop.
  3. fold the umbrella and attach decoration paper on the top
  4. take the umbrella to your home!

These processes are basically the same with real Japanese umbrella, which has been taken over since the Edo period (1600-1868).
